White Tiger is a 2012 Russian action war film with fantasy elements, directed by Karen Shakhnazarov. The film is about a badly wounded Soviet tank commander on the Eastern Front of WW II who becomes obsessed with tracking down and destroying a mysterious, invincible Nazi tank, which the Soviet troops call the "White Tiger". The Soviets design a new, more powerful T-34 tank and assign the tank commander the job of destroying the White Tiger. The film was selected as the Russian entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. The film is based on the novella Tankist, ili "Belyy tigr" (The Tank Crewman, Tanker or The White Tiger) by Russian novelist Ilya Boyashov.

My summary would have to be 'Pleasantly surprised". I went in thinking this would be a low budget, poor performance. I was gratefully and satisfyingly mistaken. This movie was absolutely superb. People often take foreign movies for granted based on the fact, they either don't speak the native tongue nor can they be bothered to read subtitles. Glad I did. Well done Russia! 10/10

This film was beautifully made. The story was interesting and the scenes seemed realistic, perhaps because it wasn't spoiled by over-dramatic Hollywood-type special effects. But the real magic lies in how the film succeeds in capturing the personalities of the characters. The artistic way in which it depicts facial expressions, and the contrast between light and darkness. Even the sound was pleasing and well-balanced. Great job and a handshake to the film makers.

Good point about "realism": but we should not forget: Hollywood-Blockbusters are also not made for realism, they are made for entertainment. I was impressed how the movie was realised: so computer effects but and no clean propaganda-heroes, but "muddy" soldiers and tanks, as it might really was.

Woah that ending monologue was epic. But still there seems to be so many plot holes, does the magic German tank exist like that or is that Russian mechanic really that crazy? Still a good movie the presentation was excellent.

This is a good movie better than I had imagined it would be. I wonder how many of my countrymen (American) realize that The Soviet Union defeated Germany with some assistance from the allies? By the time the Allies conducted the D-Day invasion Germany and its armed forces were already pretty much spent. In that light one can say that Joseph Stalin and the Soviets saved the world from what could have been a very bad Nazi century. My hat is off.
